About the Maine College Republicans

The Maine State College Republican Organization is a statewide organization of volunteers dedicated to promoting conservative principles, fighting the Left on college campuses, and taking the lead in grassroots activism. Because the Maine College Republicans have exhibited such strength in all three of these areas, the Maine College Republicans have come to be known as the flagship state College Republican federation in the nation. The organization has been honored as “The Best State Federation” in the nation in two of the past three years. The achievements of the Maine College Republicans have been truly remarkable. The organization continues to grow and now has a membership of more than 5,000 students on 24 of Maine’s college campuses. The Maine College Republicans have utilized this huge base of support to play a decisive role in guaranteeing Republican electoral successes and restoring balance on Maine’s college campuses.
Major accomplishments in recent years include delivering the youth vote in Maine to President Bush in 2004, ensuring victory for numerous Maine House and Senate candidates in 2006, and collecting the signatures to get the Republican Second Congressional District candidate a spot on the 2006 ballot. During the fall of 2006, the grassroots activism of the Maine College Republicans’ resulted in the distribution of over 50,000 pieces of campaign literature and over 250,000 voter identification calls that were crucial towards Election Day voter turnout efforts. On Election Day alone, over 250 Maine College Republicans volunteered all day in locations around the state to make telephone calls encouraging voters to turnout and support GOP candidates at the polls.

Bates College was one of the first schools in the nation to adopt an Academic Bill of Rights, ensuring academic freedom and intellectual diversity could flourish on campus. Among those have been Senator Rick Santorum, Judge Kenneth Starr, Governor Bill Owens, Bill Kristol, and many others.
On the national level, the Maine College Republicans have taken the lead in several important ways. For two consecutive years, the Maine College Republicans have brought the largest state delegation in the country to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, DC. In 2006, the organization brought 104 students to the conference. Additionally, the Maine College Republicans were the first statewide organization, among College Republicans or College Democrats, to start their own newspaper. The Maine College Republicans’ newspaper, the Pachyderm Press, has a circulation of over 10,000 copies. The organization was also the first state College Republican federation to create a Board of Governors. The Maine College Republicans are fortunate to have both of Maine's U.S. Senators on the Board of Governors, as well as other prominent political and business leaders.
