Nathaniel Walton (Bates ’08), State Chairman of the Maine College Republicans, offered the following statement on “Honoring Veterans Week:”

“The Maine College Republicans are proud to welcome Captain Tony King to four Maine college and university campuses for ‘Honoring Veterans Week.’ Captain King will give students a rare opportunity to hear a firsthand account about the situation in Iraq from a well respected Marine officer. His appearances at colleges and university campuses from Orono to Brunswick will also serve as an important reminder of the enormous sacrifice that American servicemen and women have made throughout our nation’s history, and especially today in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other fronts on the War on Terror across the globe.”

Captain Anthony King has served as a highly distinguished member of the United States Marine Corps for nearly two decades. Upon graduating from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1990, King enlisted in the Marines and was posted to an assignment as an artilleryman in California. He served in that capacity for seven years, deploying twice to Okinawa and once to Somalia during Operation Restore Hope. In 2001, Captain King graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. in Anthropology, and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Since that time, he has been deployed to Iraq on two separate occasions. During his second tour of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Captain King was stationed in the highly dangerous Al Anbar province. Captain King now serves as Officer Selection Officer (OSO) for northern New England. In August 2008, he will attend Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia, where further assignment will await him in the Fleet Marine Force.

Captain King is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Captain King currently resides in Berwick, Maine with his wife, Catherine.

Chairman Walton is available for interviews/further comments about “Honoring Veterans Week.” Chairman Walton can be reached by telephone at (207) 240-4549 or by e-mail at nwalton@bates.edu.
